One of the major goals of PEC's Green Works initiative is to encourage the use of renewable technologies. In an effort to support this initiative and provide members with advanced renewable power options, the Cooperative contracted with AEP Energy Partners to purchase 90 megawatts (MW) of wind power. The wind farm became operational on January 7, 2009.
The wind power is being generated by the South Trent Wind Farm, which consists of forty-four 2.3 MW wind turbines located near Sweetwater, Texas. In all, PEC's wind power purchase is expected to produce enough electricity to power 22,000 to 27,000 homes.
PEC offers members electricity produced by renewable sources through a renewable power rate. For members with small power production equipment, such as solar panels and wind turbines, interconnection also is available.
