If this line item does not appear on your bill, then don't worry: This indicates that you do not live in a city that charges a franchise fee.

You know you pay for the energy you use, but what are all those other items on your bill? Our Understanding Your Bill miniseries helps break it down.

Franchise fees

Depending on where you live, you may see a line item on your bill titled "Franchise Fee." This indicates that you live in a city or town that charges a fee to utilities to use city streets and public ways to provide electric service to the residents and businesses within that city's limits.

Franchise fees are negotiated between each city and utility and are passed through to PEC members on their bills. If you have questions about the franchise fee on your PEC bill, please contact your local city officials.
